Helping those Facing Food Insecurities
For most of us, summer means fun in the sun, vacations and pool time with friends. But for many families in Ohio, summer means worrying about where their next meal will come from. Ohio is one of the worst states nationally for food security, with one-third of families living here experiencing food insecurities.
At the YMCA of Central Ohio, our goal is make sure no family goes hungry, no matter what time of year. Because of the support and partnership of multiple organizations, we are able to provide programs and services that aid in bringing food to those who need it most.
Supported by the Walmart Foundation, we offer Lunch Saturdays at our Hilltop and Pickaway County Family YMCA branches, making lunch available on a day it otherwise may not be. Another program we are able to provide through the generosity of the Walmart Foundation is the Summer Food Program at multiple locations around central Ohio. This program provides nutritious meals and snacks to children and young adults, focusing on those in impoverished communities and food deserts.
In support of healthy eating within any budget, Produce Giveaways are happening at the Jerry L. Garver, Hilltop, Eldon & Elsie Ward Family and Vaughn E. Hairston YMCA's where anyone is welcome to stop by and pick up produce for themselves and their families. This initiative, with help from Mid Ohio Food Bank and Hollywood Casino, has served 8,000+ families/individuals across central Ohio with the aid of 60+ volunteers to make this happen.
At the Y, we believe in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. Through programs like these, we are able to provide all three of these beliefs by bringing those with the greatest need the most basic necessity: Food.
