Active Older Adults
The Y is a place for people of all abilities and skill levels, which is why we offer programming designed specifically for older adults. The benefits of staying active are wide-ranging: group fitness helps seniors stay socially connected, improve mental capacity, increase strength and mobility, and bounce back faster after illness or injury. We will help you stay safe and overcome any anxiety you may have about exercising as an older adult. Take a look at some of our senior-oriented fitness programs below, which accommodate a wide variety of interests and functional abilities.
Barre
Barre class is a non-impact class designed to strengthen, tone and balance the entire body utilizing the ballet barre and light props. This workout combines ballet, yoga, and Pilates with functional strength exercises and cardio to sculpt lean muscle. The beauty of barre classes is that everyone works with small movements, providing the option to limit or expand their range of motion to suit their specific needs. Exercises can always be amplified if you’re advanced and looking for more of a challenge, or modified if you have an injury or are working up to your full potential.
Cardio and Combo
Want to get your heart pumping? The American Heart Association recommends either a total of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. We offer a variety of Cardio and Combination fitness classes that help strengthen your heart and lungs, build muscle and endurance while burning calories at a high rate. With so many classes to choose from, you’ll never run out of ways to keep your body moving.
Dance/Zumba
Each Dance/Zumba® class is designed to bring people together to sweat it on. We take the "work" out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Once the Latin and World rhythms take over, you'll see why Dance/Zumba classes are often called exercise in disguise. Super effective? Check. Super fun? Check.
EnhanceFitness
Across the country, a growing number of Y associations offer Enhance®Fitness, an evidence-based group exercise program for older adults that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active throughout their life.
